The tree lying across the yard already did what it was going to do. It's ugly, it's in the way, it's the first thing everybody photographs, and it is now completely harmless.

The trees that hurt people after a storm are the ones still standing. They look fine from the driveway. Some of them genuinely are. The rest are carrying damage that a walk-around and ten minutes of attention will find, and the difference between those two groups is worth knowing before the next front comes through.

Hangers Are the Most Urgent Thing in the Yard

A hanger is a limb that broke free but never reached the ground. It's caught in a crotch, snagged on another limb, sometimes still attached by a strip of bark forty feet up. It has no schedule. It can sit there for six weeks and then come down on a still afternoon, or it can come down the moment somebody slams a car door.

Hangers are the most common reason a storm damage tree removal call comes in a full week after the weather cleared. Anything with weight suspended above a driveway, a deck, a walkway or a parking spot is the first item on the list, ahead of the trunk lying across the lawn. Do not park under it. Do not stand under it to judge how big it is. Do not throw a rope over it and pull, which is a recurring way people get hurt in the two weeks after a storm, because a hanger under tension does not fall where the physics looked like it would from the ground.

Getting them out is aerial work, and it usually means reaching the limb without climbing the damaged tree, since a storm-hit tree is exactly the thing you don't want to load with a climber's weight. That's what the 75-foot Spider Lift is for. It tracks in, folds through a three-foot opening, and puts a person next to the limb from a stable base on the ground instead of from inside a canopy that just proved it can break.

Reading the Trunk and the Major Unions

Walk the trunk from the base to as high as you can see clearly, ideally with binoculars, and look for fresh wood. Fresh means light-colored, clean, obviously different from weathered gray bark. Anything freshly exposed happened in this storm.

A crack in a major union is the finding that most often turns into a removal. Where two large leaders meet, look for a vertical seam, a gap you can slide a finger into, or a union that has visibly widened. If bark is folded down inside that union rather than solid wood knitting the stems together, it was weak before the storm and the storm just tested it. Those trees fail suddenly and they fail at the union, which means half the tree goes somewhere with no warning.

Bark torn along the trunk is a different question. A narrow strip peeled off by a falling limb, well under a quarter of the circumference, is a wound a healthy tree walls off over the next few seasons. A wide sheet gone, or damage that wraps most of the way around, cuts too much of the tissue that moves food up and down the stem, and that tree declines whether or not it ever falls over.

Dead ash deserve a separate note here. Emerald ash borer has killed enormous numbers of them across Rockingham County, and dead ash go brittle faster than any other local species. A dead ash that took a storm hit is not a tree anyone should climb, and it's not a tree to leave standing near a target either. It gets rigged from a lift or picked with a crane, which is the whole reason storm damage tree removal on ash tends to get scheduled sooner than the homeowner expected.

The Root Plate: Read the Ground Around the Base

The most missed finding in the whole inspection is at your feet. Walk a circle around the base at about the radius of the canopy and look at the soil.

What you're hunting for is movement: an arc of split turf running around one side, soil mounded or heaved on the side opposite the lean, a gap opening between the trunk flare and the ground, roots that have pulled up and are now showing. Any of those mean the root plate lifted. It doesn't take much. A plate that moved an inch has already broken a share of the anchoring roots, and those don't reattach.

This is the failure mode that follows heavy rain more than high wind. Saturated soil loses its grip, the tree leans a few degrees, and the wind that finally puts it down might be a modest one two months later. A tree with a lifted root plate is a removal, not a monitoring project, and it's the one finding where waiting has no upside at all.

How Much Crown a Tree Can Lose and Live

A full canopy is the tree's entire income. Strip too much of it at once and the tree draws down stored energy it can't replace fast enough, which shows up as sparse growth the following spring and decline over several years.

Rough guidance from what actually recovers around here: a tree that lost up to about a third of its crown to clean breaks, with its main leader intact and no trunk damage, generally comes back. Prune the broken ends back to proper cuts and give it two seasons. A tree that lost more than half is a coin flip at best, and if it's over a house, the coin isn't worth flipping.

A tree worth keeping still needs work done to it, and soon. Broken ends left ragged don't seal, so the torn stubs get cut back to a proper point on the limb where the tree can wall the wound off. That's restoration pruning, and it's usually spread over two or three visits across a couple of seasons rather than done all at once, because a tree that just lost a third of its leaves cannot afford to lose more to a saw. In between, the ordinary care matters more than it normally would: water through a dry August, mulch out over the root zone, and no fertilizer, which pushes growth the tree doesn't have the reserves to support.

Topped-out trees are their own case. When the upper trunk snaps, the tree responds by pushing dense sprouts from the wood just below the break. Those sprouts grow fast and attach poorly, so within a decade you have a heavy, top-weighted crown sitting on a decayed break point. That's a slow-motion removal, and the honest call is usually to make it a fast one instead.

The Second Storm Is What Actually Brings These Down

Here's the pattern that shows up every year. The big storm comes through, the obvious wreckage gets cleaned up, and everyone moves on. Two or three weeks later a much smaller system rolls over the valley, nothing anybody would have worried about, and that's the night the cracked union splits, the hanger drops, and the leaning tree goes over. A good share of storm damage tree removal work in this county gets done in that window, on trees that survived the event everyone remembers and failed during the one nobody does.

The mechanism isn't mysterious. A crack that opened during the first event keeps propagating every time the wood flexes. A root plate that lifted settles into its new position and loses more of its grip each time the soil gets wet. A hanger works loose a little with each gust. None of that requires another major storm. It only requires ordinary weather and enough time.

Which is why the assessment matters more than the cleanup. Getting the fallen wood off the lawn is satisfying and changes nothing about your risk. Finding the cracked union in the oak beside the driveway changes everything about it. Deciding what stays and what goes is the actual work, and the trees that need it are the ones nobody photographed.
